Mitel Customer Profile: New Mexico Public Defender Department

Since 1973, the New Mexico Public Defender Department has provided counsel to indigent persons charged with crimes in New Mexico state courts. New Mexico Public Defender Department lawyers handle around 72,000 cases each year, including misdemeanor, juvenile and felony cases.

To handle their heavy workload, the Department needed to implement a communication solution that enabled them to collaborate more effectively. They also wanted to stop paying inflated recurring costs for old analog technology.

The Department began searching for a new unified communication solution and selected Mitel because of competitive pricing, robust feature set and gigabit handset option. The system facilitates 500 users, including chat, conferencing and video capabilities, which have transformed how employees of the Department interact with each other. They also chose to virtualize their Mitel communication system, providing additional cost savings.

“Mitel’s communication solutions are saving our Agency nearly $125,000 per fiscal year while giving us a more robust, feature-rich unified communication suite,” says Daniel Calderon, Chief Information Officer at New Mexico Public Defender Department.

The implementation has been a great success, offering the Department reduced costs, additional features, enhanced employee productivity and a unification of all of their business communication tools.

“Mitel’s communication suite provides a robust, feature-rich, unified communications platform that is scalable for future growth.” — Daniel Calderon, Chief Information Officer, New Mexico Public Defender Department
