Step Into VoLTE: Create a Platform for Service Innovation

VoLTE can become the foundation for a much broader, richer set of services that enable operators to differentiate themselves in the face of competition.

Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is approaching mainstream deployment with successful launches in significant markets such as Asia and North America. Operators have significant incentive for moving voice into the IP domain of LTE. Spectral efficiencies alone can drive the business case and the operational simplicity of a single technology voice/data LTE network in the future is compelling. However, the service innovation capabilities of an all-IP voice technology are equally compelling.

As operators ready themselves to commercialize VoLTE, the initial choice for the VoLTE/IMS technology becomes hugely important – it will be the main platform for important service innovation. Once deployed, the operator must be able to leverage the platform to create richer communications services that include seamless mobility and multi-device access.

Mitel’s software-only VoLTE solution provides a flexible, foundational platform that takes operators service transformation to the next level, enhances the user experience and differentiates their service offerings.

Deploying the right VoLTE solution is only the first step in a multi-step process that will enable operators to provide high value to their subscribers. Once the VoLTE/IMS platform has been commercialized, operators can quickly leverage service innovation that will move beyond VoLTE with a richer suite of integrated communications services that are seamless across networks and devices.

Mobile subscribers are already seeing some of this innovation beyond VoLTE from several mobile operators:

    ·       Wi-Fi Calling (VoWi-Fi) – T-Mobile US Wi-Fi Calling service enables voice and messaging services over Wi-Fi. The T-Mobile service improves network coverage (in indoor locations), extends voice and messaging services when subscribers are roaming abroad, reduces cost of capacity and increases customer satisfaction.

    ·       Video calling and conferencing service – Verizon Wireless video calling service on VoLTE (Advanced Calling 1.0) makes it easier for subscribers to initiate a video call with a push of a button. Two-way as well as one-way video calling is offered so subscribers can see the person they are talking to without sharing a video of themselves.

    ·       Rich Communication Services (RCS) – Deutsche Telekom in Germany launched RCS-based messaging services that can include rich call, instant messaging, group chat, presence, address book, file transfer, content sharing, real-time device capability discovery and others.

    ·       WebRTC Services – AT&T announced support for WebRTC via its Enhanced WebRTC API for its developers. When commercialized, the service will allow subscribers the ability to launch AT&T communications services through supported web browsers. For example, caller ID can be retained for calls placed from WebRTC-enabled browsers and users will be able to move or transfer a call starting on a PC, laptop or tablet to a smartphone.

We provide innovative, end-to-end VoLTE, voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi), RCS and WebRTC solutions and other communications services based on the Mitel IMS/VoLTE platform. Our software solutions have already been commercialized at several mobile carriers globally in a virtualized deployment. Mitel VoLTE establishes an IP platform with numerous service possibilities that operators can leverage to differentiate services, compete with over-the-top application providers, and capture high growth market segments such as machine-to-machine (M2M), telemedicine, government, finance, emergency centers, public utility and others.

Operators need to “step into VoLTE” with bold determination. We provide the right platform for service innovation, service parity, seamless mobility, and virtualized scalability that allow them to do that.
