New system will enhance campus safety
The new ENS will be used to alert and inform the Carleton community in the event of a major incident or campus emergency. The university is investing $350,000 in the project.
"We are pleased to have such a state-of-the-art system that will serve us well in our continuing efforts to make Carleton an even safer, more secure campus community," says President Roseann O'Reilly Runte.
Carleton partnered with Mitel and Benbria to configure the system, resulting in an innovative, unique three-tiered method of notification. In the event of an emergency, it can issue:
1) A PC desktop alert that will deliver an on-screen message as it locks thousands of campus computers.
2) Mass email notification to nearly 27,000 accounts.
3) Text messages to every person who has voluntarily provided a cellphone number.
"Carleton's new ENS is an impressive use of technology that meets today's critical challenge of mass notification," says Vern White, chief of the Ottawa Police Services. "I encourage all large employers and other public institutions to deploy a similar system."
