Be a "rising star": A look at the recent ARN Women in ICT Awards event
ShoreTel recently hosted a table at the annual ARN Women in ICT Awards to celebrate the nomination of our marketing director for Asia Pacific, Emma McCormack. Emma was a finalist in the ‘rising star’ category for her contribution to the ICT sector spanning a 17 year career.
The audience, including our ShoreTel table of women/men from the Sydney office, female leaders from our partner community and women who had been mentors and influencers to Emma’s career, were captivated by stories of successful, entrepreneurial women who are making a difference in the Australian ICT industry.
We heard from inspiring women who challenged us to be the best at what we do and to market our own personal brand along the way. The 6 award winners acknowledged the influential male/female mentors in their working lives and ultimately showed us they deserved to win for their hard work, skills and self-promotion of these achievements.
Entrepreneur Wendy O’Keeffe, executive vice president of Asia Pacific for the Westcon Group, was the keynote speaker and urged the women in the room to ask to be heard. Her observation over her career was that the people who were always in her office were men. She said that the women she worked with tended to assume their achievements would be acknowledged, while men make a concerted effort to ensure that their success is well documented. O'Keeffe also said that women need to demonstrate future planning such as the ability to grow business, skills at leading a team and an ongoing ability to self-promote. She wanted everyone to know she thought we were awesome, and asked that we took time to acknowledge one another and what we bring to our companies and the Australian business community as a whole.
We congratulate Emma on her success and while she didn’t win her category, she has reached out to the winner and the other nominees to create an informal networking group in an effort to continue the momentum generated from the event. It was a fabulous day to acknowledge the contribution we are making to the industry and ShoreTel in Australia.
