BYOD Challenges Businesses to Examine Best Practices for Employees

    The rapidly growing BYOD trend is forcing businesses to consider how employees using their own devices will affect business processes in ways that are still being played out.

    Hourly workers and salespeople will use these devices in different ways and will present different challenges for their employers, according to a article.

    Employees are increasingly using their favorite mobile devices to work where and when they want, using devices such as the iPhone and iPad to access apps such as the ShoreTel Mobility suite of mobile unified communications tools and ShoreTel Dock to transform the devices into desk phones.

    For hourly employees, BYOD offers freedom to no longer have to punch a clock. The flip side is that they may be called on to work at all hours, which in turn may lead to push-back from workers, the article said.

    Mobile device management software vendors may be able to address such issues. “The question will be whether or not MDM will be able to corral work requests for BYOD hourly employees in a realistic way,” wrote the article author, Tom Kaneshige.

    In contrast to hourly workers, salespeople often want to work all hours of the day to get a competitive advantage, whether it’s on the golf course or at dinner with a client. They want as much information as they can get on their mobile devices, such as from apps like Company managers must determine how much information they can permit to be accessible.

    The article said businesses have not yet developed formal policies as they see how the BYOD trend will develop. But they better not wait too long, as BYOD looks like it’s here to stay.
