Cloud-based unified communications attractive for all businesses

    Unified communications and cloud computing are two technologies that businesses of all sizes and industries can get behind, including those operating in the trucking industry. Network World's Christine Burns recently reported that Hendrickson International Corporation, a global supplier of truck, bus, tractor and recreational vehicles, adopted cloud-based Unified Communications-as-a-Service (UCaaS) to upgrade its IT infrastructure.

    Hendrickson, which is generally conservative to adopt innovative technologies, found little resistance to implementing UCaaS to replace its outdated PBX system, the news source reported. With nearly 20 manufacturing, product development and customer service centers worldwide, the company sought a platform to enhance communication and collaboration among its global workforce, rather than continue using more expensive on-premise solutions.

    "The company also needed to replace legacy analog telephone lines and wanted to utilize video conferencing between offices and manufacturing facilities as well as with customers, business partners and sales prospects," Burns explained.

    Hendrickson CIO Rick Johnson noted that the UCaaS deployment, compared to on-site systems, was approximately half the price, and has been distributed to 500 of its employees. By the end of the year, the technology will be available to 1,200 users, Burns reported.

    Cloud, unified communications are a perfect match

    "The resulting implementation will most likely be a combination of different products marketed as Unified Communications-as-a-service, but will be deployed across different platforms, including mobile devices, into what is known as mobile collaboration," Salam wrote.

    Other industry experts have highlighted the significance of both cloud computing and unified communications. According to SYS-CON Media's Karil Reibold, organizations are allowing more employee-owned devices to enter the office and the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) movement can be supported by cloud-based unified communications to ensure even greater operational agility.

    With cloud-based unified communications in place, businesses can deliver a uniform user experience to all employees regardless of the device they use, according to Reibold.
