Mobility is Making a Difference to UK Law Firms

    With the world’s biggest mobile event, Mobile World Congress, taking place in Barcelona this week, my news feeds have bombarded me with mobile stories. While the show was once very carrier and telco-focused, it has now grown to look at mobility in a much wider sense, with many business software companies exhibiting at the event.

    This evolution reflects the changes in the business world in general. Whereas, 10 years ago an IT manager might not have been interested in mobile developments at Mobile World Congress, now mobility has become a top priority, since it is a key driver for change and efficiency.

    I work for Wright Hassall Solicitors -- a top 200 UK full-service, commercial law firm based in Leamington Spa in the Midlands region of the UK. We are growing rapidly and have plans to break into the top 100 group of law firms, but I believe this will require a smarter use of IT and in particular mobility.

    Typically, the UK legal sector has been more traditional in its approach to technology and therefore slower to adopt BYOD and mobility. However, this is changing fast for a range of reasons, including the fact that regional firms like mine now compete across the country for work, with customers choosing firms based on the Internet rather than high-street presence or location. Technologies like mobility are helping to level the playing field, allowing fee-earners based anywhere in the country to compete with counterparts in London.

    For example at Wright Hassall, working with Solar Communications, we provide ShoreTel ONE for all staff so that our solicitors are in touch, both with colleagues and clients, wherever they are. With ShoreTel Mobility, they can seamlessly switch a call on their deskphone in the office to their mobiles if they’re on their way out to see a client, at court or even if they want to work from home. Solicitors and support staff are able to use presence to check on the availability of colleagues and therefore provide a more responsive service to clients. Additionally, they have one mailbox to check for email and voicemail so that they no longer risk missing important client messages when they are not at their desks. This dynamic communication is enabling us to take service out to clients wherever they’re working.

    And what’s more, for all the commentary about the legal-sector being behind the curve in terms of mobile technology adoption, I have found that our staff, particularly younger trainees and associates, have so far been incredibly enthusiastic about adopting ShoreTel Mobility and have a healthy appetite for more.

    5G is one of the main themes of next week’s Mobile World Congress. For law firms and other businesses spread across smaller towns in the UK, the availability of 3G and 4G networks has been vital in enabling transformative mobile strategies. Without these networks we would be unable to benefit from mobility software. I sincerely hope the 5G discussions go well, because its roll-out across the UK will herald another change in our businesses, thanks to mobility apps like ShoreTel’s.
