Once Upon a Time...

    It is hard to believe that once upon a time the best new idea in business automation was the Rolodex.  I came across this old advertisement the other day and just had to laugh.  “The last word in filing convenience.”  Really?

    It is unlikely that you are still organizing your contacts on index cards, but lots of folks are still using 1960’s technology to make the call once they find the number.  The digital revolution fundamentally changed the way people store, access and interact with information.  The Internet revolution makes the same leap forward possible for telephony.  A phone call no longer needs to be a discrete, independent event like a phone number on an index card.  It can be integrated into the information landscape, in the same way that customer contact information is blended with their purchase history, support requests, contracts and other vital details.

    I’m glad I came across this little piece of history.  It is easier to figure out where we are and where we are going if we remember where we have been.
