Okay, so let’s answer the obvious question first: What is Cloud X.0? You can think of it as the next generation of cloud services, the “not just for IT anymore” cloud. The first cloud generation, Cloud 1.0, was really designed for IT people as a way to expand their data center without adding more cost and complexity to it. But the new generation of cloud services is about giving business users and customers more flexibility, reliability, mobility and simplicity in the way they communicate and collaborate.
Why not just call it Cloud 2.0? Because the new requirements (flexibility, reliability, mobility, simplicity) aren’t limited to a single generation. They will remain an integral part of the user experience: an X factor that will evolve with time but never disappear.
Here’s a comparison to illustrate the difference between the two clouds:
Runs 8:00 to 5:00, Monday – Friday
Delivers apps to your workplace
Lives in a world where mobile broadband penetration is 30-40%
Equates flexibility with # of applications
Takes days to set up new services
Runs 24/7/365 to fit the dynamic workday
Understands that wherever you are IS your workplace
Lives in a world where mobile broadband penetration is 80-90%
Integrates applications into a single solution
Take minutes to set up new services
Customizes the cloud experience
The inability of Cloud 1.0 to deliver the kind of experience that end users want is clear. In a recent survey conducted with Spiceworks, we discovered that two out of three enterprises were dissatisfied with their current cloud communications systems. The problem is that, while today’s cloud is bigger, it’s not necessarily better. First-generation cloud solutions have fallen behind the mobile-first mentality of a millennial generation that will soon become the dominant force in the workforce. It doesn’t fit their needs because, frankly, it wasn’t designed to fit their needs in the first place.
Cloud X.0 is the very reason that Mitel built a completely new cloud platform for our MiCloud offering. We wanted a cloud solution that reflected the millennial workforce: mobile communications as the first and last thought of every day rather than an afterthought, simple interfaces that are designed around the apps they use every day, and flexible for a dynamic work/life balance that doesn’t fit into a five-day, 9-to-5 mold.
Of course, Cloud X.0 still meets all of the critical enterprise requirements for security, reliability and cost efficiency. But it also recognizes that being productive shouldn’t be work; it should be a seamless extension of the way you communicate and collaborate best.
You can even leave your Cloud 1.0 world behind without dragging a big contract with you. For a limited time, Mitel will buy out your existing cloud contract when you move to MiCloud. So what are you waiting for? Move up to a better cloud experience with MiCloud Office today.
