As Wearables Move Mainstream, Changes Loom For Enterprise BYOD

    Apple finally unveiled its highly anticipated smart-watch this month, and it's already making waves within the tech community. Now Salesforce has announced, along with a number of other more consumer-focused app developers, that it will support the Apple Watch. 

    Salesforce already partners with a variety of other wearable device manufacturers, including Philips Healthcare and Google, and the company understands that wearable tech is the way of the future.

    "With the excitement around the forthcoming Apple Watch, it's becoming clear that the cloud, social, mobile and data science revolutions are converging on the wrist," wrote Raj Mistry, senior vice president of solutions engineering at Salesforce in a blog post. "Wearable devices present a tremendous opportunity for businesses to connect with customers, partners, employees and even products in a whole new way."

    Mistry went on to say that IT decision-makers shouldn't underestimate the potential of wearables to have a strong impact on the enterprise. Most consider wearable technology to be within the realm of consumers, but they are quickly gaining a foothold in the business world as well. Companies in the healthcare, manufacturing and AEC sectors have realized numerous benefits through the use of wearables, and it's only a matter of time before other industries catch on.

    Wearables Offer A Variety Of Benefits For Enterprise Communication

    Salesforce uses the Apple Watch to deliver tailored notifications to salespeople, service agents and other employees so they are able to respond more quickly. This same principle can easily be applied to a variety of communication features, making wearables the next logical step in enterprise communication. Cloud-based communication solutions are becoming increasingly popular among businesses, and as more companies incorporate their employees' wearable devices into their bring-your-own device programs, combining the two technologies will open up variety of new advantages.

    According to information from Rackspace, 18 percent of people in the U.S. already utilize wearable technology despite it experiencing growth only recently. The study also revealed that 47 percent of wearable device users felt more intelligent after adopting the technology and 61 percent felt more informed. Perhaps the most telling statistics for the future of wearables in the enterprise was the fact that 37 percent of users reported the technology helping with their career development and 61 percent experiencing an improvement in personal efficiency.

    As wearable devices become more pervasive and their benefits realized by an increasing number of users, enterprises need to start preparing themselves to include the technology into their infrastructure.
