Amstelland Hospital

Accessibility is a matter of life or death in a hospital. Precious seconds may be lost if a specialist, a member of the CPR team or an IC nurse first has to find a fixed telephone extension when they receive an alert on their pager. When Amstelland Hospital in Amstelveen started looking for a replacement for its telephone switchboard, one of the most important requirements was optimum accessibility via portable handsets.

Amstelland Hospital drew up a Schedule of Requirements for three elements of its communication infrastructure: telephony, a WLAN and localization. A combination of components from multiple providers was selected to ensure a best of breed solution that could integrate seamlessly with the hospital’s incumbent fixed network equipment: IP telephony from Mitel®, Wifi handsets and care system from Ascom and a WLAN from Trapeze Networks.

    Goals
    • Improved accessibility of doctors and nurses
    • Integration of fixed and wireless telephony
    Results
    • Immediate availability of hospital employees
    • Future-proof solution
    • Most components implemented with 100% redundancy to ensure maximum availability
    • Separate voice and data to ensure that data communication remains functional irrespective of the availability of voice
    • Wandering patient detection in the nursing department
    • Wireless internet on the wards
