"Having our phone system virtualized lets us in IT sleep better. We also appreciate the high quality Mitel phones we can rely on.” - Jay Hadley, IT Director, City of Rancho Cordova
City governments face unique challenges when it comes to communications. A few years ago, the City of Rancho Cordova was faced with some communication challenges of their own.
One challenge involved staff that split their day between two workspace—spending part of the day at front counters working with city residents on permits and licenses, and the rest of the day at their own individual desks. Each of these employees had two separate phones and accompanying phone numbers—one at the main desk phone in their cubicle and one when they covered a shift at the counter, since moving their desk phone wasn’t practical.
The City’s Code Enforcement department posed another challenge—they didn’t want to give out their cell phone numbers for security reasons. Finally, the IT department was using eight physical servers to run their phone systems—some of which were no longer supported.
They turned to Mitel and installed virtual instances of MiVoice Business, MiCollab, Integrated Voice Response (IVR), IP Operator Console, and Teleworker. The biggest benefits have for the city have included:
- Staff can now hotdesk into the phones wherever they work
- Code Enforcement officers can use the MiCollab Mobile Client to keep their cell phone numbers private
- Code Enforcement officers can answer their office phones from their smartphones when they choose
- Increased mobility so staff is not locked down to one desk
- High quality phones and software
- Reliable software that requires fewer IT resources to manage
“The city has won the Digital Cities Award two years in a row. One of the reasons we have won is how we use technology such as virtual desktops,” explains Jay Hadley, IT Director at City of Rancho Cordova. The award is for top cities that recognize the value of technology, empower their tech leaders and use new ideas to make life better for everyone who lives there. We congratulate the City of Rancho Cordova for their wins and we’re excited to be part of their success.
