In 2018, virtual private networks are accorded a high ranking just as they were two years ago in a similar survey that covered only southern European countries. With very slight national variations, 94% of companies state that they prefer communications that rely on a virtual private network, rather than an Over-the-Top system (OTT).
Is this overwhelming preference the logical choice of company executives who seek the least risk for their investments? Or is it the consequence of OTT service quality that is not sufficiently guaranteed?
The survey does not offer enough information or insight to sufficiently answer these questions. It would be particularly interesting to track how this evolves, especially at a time when most businesses are looking for the best balance between maximum adaptability and flexibility (mobility, multimodal access, real time processing, etc.) and increasingly stringent security requirements where access to data is concerned.
While the most well-known and widely used mass market applications seem to pave the way for OTT solutions, professional applications are clearly facing a paradox. It is up to suppliers to demonstrate that this deployment option can go hand in hand with performance, flexibility and adaptability.
