STRUCTIS, the informatics EIG of Bouygues Construction in charge of IT resources and telecommunications for the group, has selected Mitel® and its integrator, Exprimm'iT, affiliate of Bouygues, to deploy the latest unified communications solution. With their 52,600 associates employed in over 80 countries, the communications management within Bouygues Construction plays a key role. The principal task of Structis is to put innovative solutions into place to support the various group's activities. In this sense, the informatics EIG hopes to federate the global Bouygues Construction's communications system in order to optimize costs, and to put into place an open solution for the implementation of new communications tools, especially in terms of mobility and unified messaging.
Moreover, the group is simultaneously managing some 1,500 remote temporary sites with an average lifespan of 18 months. Bouygues Construction must be able to depend upon communications tools that are reliable, quick to install, and to de-install.
"Closing down a work site means reprogramming and reinstallation of communications at another worksite, sometimes all within just a few hours," states Amaury Pitrou, system, network and telecom project manager at Bouygues Construction. "The simplicity and flexibility of the Mitel solution have allowed us to put into place an efficient procedure from one work site to another, thus allowing costs to be streamlined." In addition, the installation of Mitel IP phones at workstations is facilitated by their Ethernet concentrator functionality, which avoids additional cabling.
Today, more than 100 group sites, including its headquarter Challenger at Guyancourt, France, are equipped with Mitel 3300 IP Communications Platforms (ICPs), representing nearly 12,000 IP phones by the end of the year.
"Employees of Bouygues Construction overwhelmingly support the new telephony applications, in particular, presence management," explains Patrick Pommier, integration manager at Exprimm'iT for the Bouygues Construction Group. "Indeed, the Challenger site is very well-developed and it is indispensable for employees to be able to verify the availability of a colleague quickly and easily."
Bouygues Construction deployed the application Mitel Live Business Gateway, which brings a high level of integration of the telephony systems with Microsoft unified communications applications (instant messaging, presence management) and which was one of the strong arguments of the Mitel proposal at the time of bid tendering.
Apart from the structuring aspect of the project, the move to IP allows Bouygues Construction to benefit from the perks of communication without charge between its employees, either in France or anywhere in the world. Work sites, until recently stand-alone, are now connected to the communication system of the group resulting in better communication and collaboration between the various entities.
The initial phase of this installation took place under ideal conditions, particularly due to the expertise of Exprimm'iT in its management of large-scale projects and its broad knowledge of the group as well as the understanding of Mitel and the needs and expectations of Bouygues Construction in regard to its IP infrastructure. "The next step for Mitel is to make the integration of fixe-mobile convergence a reality for all employees of Bouygues Construction," concludes Lionel Hovsepian, European sales director at Mitel.
