Unlike traditional data firewall solutions, OpenScape SBC is specifically designed to provide VoIP traffic security. It terminates a SIP session on the WAN side of the SBC outside of the enterprise voice network, ensures the traffic is originating from an authorized source, inspects the SIP and media packets for protocol violations or irregularities. OpenScape SBC dynamically opens and closes firewall "pin holes" for RTP and SRTP media connections.

The compatibility of OpenScape Session Border Controller has been confirmed with Mitel’s MiVoice Business, MiVoice MX-ONE, and MiVoice 5000 (soon). Additionally, it is designed to integrate with OpenScape Voice, OpenScape 4000, and OpenScape Business (soon).

OpenScape Session Border Controller offers various deployment options. It's currently available as virtualized software for VMWare ESXI. Soon, it'll include Commercial-off-the-shelf solutions like Lenovo servers and a Gateway option with Kontron servers. Additionally, OpenScape SBC Cloud will soon support Hyper-V and KVM / Proxmox, providing scalable and reliable cloud-based solutions for seamless communication management.

OpenScape SBC is fully manageable via the same Common Management Platform (CMP) that is used to manage other network elements in the OpenScape Enterprise solution, providing a simple day-to-day user management process.
