    What’s the Difference Between Public, Private and Hybrid Cloud Communications?

     

    Deploying your business communications system in a cloud-based environment opens up many opportunities. A cloud platform enables the integration of VoIP-based unified communications, SaaS and API integration, quick service updates, and of course, lower TCO for your entire communications system.

    However, choosing the right cloud-based telephony platform takes a little bit of thought. With options from public cloud to private cloud to hybrid cloud, you need to first understand which makes sense for your business to get the best ROI. 

    So, what are those little differences between these three cloud options?

    Private cloud

    A private cloud is implemented within the secure confines of a firewall, most likely your own company firewall, and is only accessible by your business. The number one pro of a private cloud is security. With total control of who and what can access the information within your private cloud environment, you significantly mitigate the risk of a data breach. The downside is that you’re on the hook to ensure that your network can withstand the risk of a possible data breach, or at least detect it early. So, redundancy is not as failsafe as it could be if you were in a hybrid cloud environment.

    Hybrid cloud

    For many, this environment is the best of both worlds. A hybrid cloud communications deployment is comprised of both a cloud system and an on-premises system so you have more redundancy capabilities. This deployment makes sense for businesses that don’t necessarily want to give up the benefits and control that come with an on-premises communications system, but perhaps want to become more agile with how they deploy and manage communications applications—think unified communications for mobility and productivity and even contact center features.

    Public cloud

    This version of a cloud environment might sound scarier than it actually is. We might think that the word “public” would mean that your business’ data is completely at risk and exposed. That isn’t the case. Think of a public cloud environment as an apartment complex, or multi-tenant situation. Your cloud space is yours. It’s secure, based on the security measures your hosting company takes, and you have room for a substantial amount of data, depending on how much space you need, and how much you want to spend. The benefit of a public cloud environment includes off-premise hosting and management. This environment is a great option for small or start-up businesses that don’t necessarily want to invest too much in full-scale network management and IT staff. Like all cloud environments, the cost savings are significant. With a public cloud-based communications system you also get license/subscription-based pricing, speedy updates and the ability to deploy VoIP-based unified communications and SaaS based apps as well.
