At 9:40 on a Tuesday evening, a fiber cut down the road takes a resort offline. The Wi-Fi drops, which guests notice within a minute. What guests never see is everything else that vanished with it: the phones went, the staff messaging went, the paging system went, and the front desk's connection to the reservation platform went — all at once, because all of them travelled the same connection.
An office building in the same situation sends its people home. A property has nowhere to send anyone. Four hundred guests are on the property, some asleep, some at the bar, one (statistically, on any given night) about to have a medical problem. The restaurant is mid-service, housekeeping is turning down rooms. The business of the building continues at full occupancy, but the nervous system has just switched off.
This is the specific shape of downtime in hospitality: the operation runs around the clock, the customers live inside it, and the systems that fail are the same systems staff would use to manage the failure. Frost & Sullivan finds that 71% of hospitality organizations report inefficiencies in security and emergency response workflows even in ordinary conditions, and an outage is the moment those workflows carry their highest stakes.
How Consolidation Built a Single Point of Failure
The last decade of communications modernization delivered real gains by converging voice, messaging, paging, and guest services onto shared networks and, increasingly, onto internet-delivered platforms. Consolidation simplified management, cut hardware, and connected systems that used to ignore each other.
But convergence also concentrated risk. When every communication channel rides one internet connection to one remote platform, that link becomes the property's single point of failure, and its failure modes multiply: the fiber cut, the ISP outage, the platform-side incident on the other side of the world, the DDoS aimed at someone else's infrastructure entirely. Systems that once failed independently — the phones on their own circuits, the paging on its own wiring — now fail together, completely, and simultaneously.
The critical design question is what remains when the wide-area connection is gone. A property with local survivability keeps its internal nervous system alive through an outage: staff can still call staff, the front desk can still reach a guest room, an emergency call can still leave the building. A property with none goes dark internally over an external event, and the failure travels much further than the fault. The question deserves the same standing in procurement as any feature checklist, because it determines what a bad night looks like.
Cruise ships have run this way from the beginning, out of necessity: the wide-area link is a satellite connection (metered, weather-dependent, and sometimes gone), so everything essential to running the ship communicates onboard, with the shore link treated as an enhancement. A ship mid-ocean is the survivability question answered in the affirmative every day, and land properties evaluating their own architecture can read it as proof that the standard is achievable.
A Hotel Is a Campus Wearing One Name
Resiliency has a second, equally important dimension: geography. A resort spans multiple buildings, gardens, a beach, a spa, underground service corridors. A city-centre property stacks thirty floors of concrete over a basement laundry. A cruise ship layers fourteen decks of steel around an engine room, with crew areas below the waterline. Staff move through all of it, and the guest expectation that help should arrive fast, wherever they are, holds in the wine cellar exactly as it does in the lobby.
Coverage gaps behave like scheduled outages: the dead zone by the pool plant fails every shift, whether or not the internet is up. A maintenance tech out of radio range, a security officer whose handset drops in the stairwell, a housekeeper on a floor the network forgot — each represents the same condition as the fiber cut, at smaller scale and higher frequency. Multi-building properties need communications engineered to reach the entire footprint of the operation, with coverage treated as a life-safety parameter as well as a productivity one. In an emergency, the notification that reaches 90% of staff will be remembered for the 10% it missed.
Reliability Is Now a Board-Level Number
Hospitality IT leaders already rank this near the top of their worries. In Frost & Sullivan's study, 92% of hospitality IT/telecom departments cite security concerns and 90% cite ensuring network stability and reliability among their significant near-term challenges — the two highest-scoring items in the research, ahead of systems integration, compliance, and cloud migration itself.
Those two numbers travel together. An unreliable network and a compromised one produce the same operational outcome (staff who can't communicate), and both put the property's duty of care in question at the exact moment guests are most dependent on it.
Regulators have noticed too: emergency-dialing requirements in many jurisdictions assume the phone system works during the emergency, an assumption that becomes an architecture requirement.
Designing for the Bad Night
Resiliency is a set of design decisions, made early, mostly invisible until they matter:
- Decide what must survive an outage, explicitly. Internal calling, emergency dialing, staff alerting, and guest-room reachability belong on the list at almost every property. Write the list before evaluating any platform; it becomes the test every architecture has to pass.
- Match the deployment model to the survivability requirement. On-site, cloud, and hybrid deployments distribute risk differently, and properties differ in how much risk each can carry. A highway hotel with a hospital nearby and a remote island resort have different bad nights, for example. Deployment choice is fundamentally a risk decision.
- Engineer coverage to the property line. Survey the real building — service corridors, parking levels, grounds — and close the dead zones.
- Rehearse the failure. Pull the WAN link in a controlled test and watch what happens. The differences between what was supposed to keep working and what actually did become the remediation list.
The Tuesday-Evening Test
Walk your property and ask one question of each communication system: what does this do when the internet is gone? Take the answers from observation, since documentation generally records good intentions. The set of things that keep working is the resiliency posture your guests are betting on, without knowing it, every night of their stay.
