Western Placer Unified School District

Western Placer Unified School District (WPUSD) serves a growing community of students, educators, and administrators. With a mission to “Empower Minds, Ignite Futures,” the district prioritizes innovation and collaboration. However, its aging phone system was holding them back.

At A Glance

Most of the schools in WPUSD relied on analog AT&T lines, and the only VoIP system, at a continuation high school, was running a cloud environment, which Kevin Perry, WPUSD’s Director of Technology, described as difficult to manage. Frequent outages, rising maintenance costs, and lack of scalability made modernization urgent.

Goals

  • WPUSD needed a communication solution that could:
  • Eliminate reliability issues caused by analog lines
  • Scale easily for new construction and remodels
  • Simplify management across multiple campuses

Results

WPUSD chose Mitel MiVoice Business for its flexibility, scalability, and reliability in education environments. The platform delivered a unified communication system that grows with the district’s needs while reducing complexity.

Working with Maverick Networks, WPUSD ensured a smooth transition. Maverick managed everything from requirements analysis to implementation and helped the district use contract vehicles for predictable pricing and streamlined procurement, critical for planning future expansions.

Outcomes included:

  • Improved Reliability: Eliminated analog lines and reduced outages.
  • Simplified Management: Centralized system that’s easy to maintain.
  • Scalability: Phased upgrades aligned with new construction and remodels.
  • Enhanced Collaboration: Extension dialing between campuses for faster internal communication.

WPUSD continues its partnership with Maverick under a service agreement for ongoing optimization and failover testing. Today, the district has a modern, unified communication system that supports its mission and future growth.

“Once we had the process down after the first year, we could deploy two elementary schools in a day. From start to finish, we’ve been super happy. Everyone knows our system inside and out, which made each rollout easier."
